Battery Park, New York City

Irish Hunger Memorial in NYCOpened July 16, 2002, two blocks west of Ground Zero. The plan for the memorial was announced a number of years ago. As it turns out, the location chosen is two blocks due west of the center of Ground Zero. The first three photos below are looking down from the top, back towards Ground Zero. The trees and the buildings in the distance are located opposite from where the World Trade Center formally stood.

The white lines that run around the foundation of the memorial contain excerpts from diaries, legal papers and newspaper accounts of the Irish Hunger.

From the top of the Memorial (not pictured) Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are visible.
