I have been taking portraits since I first picked up a camera in 1972. However it wasn't untilI started working in the 6 x 6 format, that I learned to compose in a way that was not inherently unflattering of the subjects. The 35 mm camera, for me at least, is a very fast tool, one that lends itself to reaction and not composition. When using one, I find myself looking not just at a person, but what their actions are and what surrounds them. Most times, I end up photographing the person through a sarcastic prism.

The 6x6 is a little slower. The camera body does not hide my face. Not only can I look the subject in the eye, he or she has an opportunity to look at my expression as well, as I look downwards into the viewfinder. There is an unspoken, unacknowledged, trust between us that I am loath to violate. As I have more time to compose, there is more time to talk with the subject and to think about how they wish to present themselves to the world. This method may not present as much opportunity for humor, but it is certainly more rewarding.
